Job Creation

"Rutherford County has real strengths, but we face serious economic challenges. Our young people are leaving because too few opportunities exist here. Many small businesses never get off the ground or fail before truly blossoming because they lack affordable space and the support needed to succeed. That has to change."

Partner with the Chamber of Commerce

Our local Chamber of Commerce is one of the most underutilized resources available to Rutherford County business owners. Phil will work to strengthen that partnership and make sure every small business owner knows what support is available to them.

  • Connect business owners to state and federal grant programs
  • Provide access to business coaching and financial planning resources
  • Reduce barriers to starting and growing a business in Rutherford County

Revitalize Our Downtowns

Rutherford County has too many empty storefronts and deteriorating commercial buildings holding our downtowns back. Phil will work with our cities and towns to pursue funding that puts those properties back into productive use.

  • Pursue state and federal grants to buy and renovate vacant commercial properties
  • Partner with local governments to identify priority buildings in each downtown
  • Create move-in-ready spaces that lower the cost of starting a business

Buy Rutherford Campaign

Too many residents don't know what Rutherford County has to offer. Phil will work with the Tourism Development Authority to launch a "Buy Rutherford" campaign that promotes our local restaurants, shops, and entertainment to the people who live here first.

  • Partner with the Tourism Development Authority on a resident-focused marketing effort
  • Highlight local dining, entertainment, and retail across county platforms
  • Drive foot traffic to downtown businesses and encourage locals to shop local

The Rail Trail as an Economic Asset

Trail networks across the country have proven themselves as economic development tools - driving tourism, attracting businesses, and revitalizing the communities around them. The Thermal Belt Rail Trail is a real asset. The goal is to build on it, connect it, and fund it in ways that maximize its return for the county.

  • Work with Rutherfordton and other municipalities to connect trail segments into a larger, unified network
  • Pursue state and federal grants to fund trail expansion, connectivity improvements, and amenities
  • Partner with the Tourism Development Authority to market the trail as a regional destination
  • Support trail-adjacent commercial development by ensuring surrounding corridors have water and sewer access
